Tea for Lifewater Friday, August 07, 2009
When I returned from my trip to Liberia, Africa with Lifewater Canada, I decided to blend my own tea as a way of reminding myself of the privilege it is to have clean water to drink. My hope is that everytime we drink this tea we will remember our brothers and sisters across the globe and be encouraged by the fact that this is helping to bring clean water to people in Liberia. "Live for you" tea is a rooibus loose leaf tea, caffeine free and full of anti-oxidants. Each package of tea makes 30 cups . When I launched the tea in June with the release of my new EP "Streetlights" I had no idea it would go over so well! Thankyou for your emails and tea orders, we are selling out of the regularly which is awesome! To order "Live for you" tea email info@jodiking.com

STREET LIGHTS the new EP! Friday, March 27, 2009
On March 5th, 2009 we booked "Signpost Studio" in my hometown Winnipeg, MB and recorded a new six song EP entitled "Street Lights". This was a ton of fun, a chance to be creative and share some new songs that have been brewing... Adrian Bradford held down production duties and Tyer Burkum drove in from Minneapolis to play guitar. The project turned out beautifully and it now available for download at www.myspace.com/jodiking Hope you enjoy!

Hello from Liberia, Africa! Sunday, November 23, 2008
Hello from Liberia, Africa

We are headed out the door to sing 'I live for you' with a 50 voice African choir right now, I can't wait.  We rehearsed with them in a big wooden church and when they came in on the chorus it was such a beautiful moment.   Africa is beautiful; I’m living a blue minus 3 star beach house on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.  Someone told me today that if you fit the continents of Africa and South America together Liberia would be right next to Brazil...pretty cool.   It feels like a jungle rainforest here, super humid and the temp reaches 45 degrees everyday.

The most beautiful part of Africa is the people.  Their faces are so full of joy and deep emotion.  Everyone here has lost someone in the Liberian civil war that lasted 15 years and ended 3 years ago.  I’ve never experienced the devastation of war in a country and the mess that it leaves behind.  The country is so torn and ruined from what it came through and the people carry the scares.

But still they have more joy than I do most days.  We visited a school yesterday and the kids sang for us and we sang for them.  The cost of a year in school is 130 dollars including the uniform and chair they have to purchase.  The teachers get played 30 dollars a month and most work another job to make ends meet.  This blew my mind...

I helped out at the Lifewater drill site this morning, amazing to see Liberian men working and being taught alongside Canadian drillers.  The work of Lifewater is felt in this country, it seems that clean water and an education is the beginning of a new life, building them a future.   Living amidst the people and experiencing such poverty has been overwhelming...but I’m so glad I’m here.  I don't think I’m helping all that much, but I learning a ton.

Hopefully we'll get this internet signal again and I can send another update!

love Jodi

Thanksgiving Friday, October 10, 2008

Happy Thanksgiving!!
Giving comes in many shapes and sizes; I usually think financial when I hear the word "give" but giving of yourself, your time, your talents is a way only you can...give.  Hope you are encouraged to live out what you have inside and offer it to the world!
A friend of mine gave me a bookmark with a great quote on it, so with this I say Happy Thanksgiving!
"Real progres is progress in compasion.  All other advances are secondary."

we leave on Remembrance day for Liberia, Africa Friday, September 05, 2008
Ever since I was a little girl all I wanted to drink was water.  I always wanted to like coke, but anything fizzy just didn't do it for me.  I've never liked milk (unless its with a cookie) and ice tea is ok...but even that is water based, and now that I'm all grown up I LOVE tea.  All of my favorite drinks revolve around clean water, and to think that one-sixth of the people on the earth are without safe water is a scarry reality.  Eighty percent of sickness and death among CHILDREN is caused by unsafe water.  According to UNICEF, rural African women and girls spend as many as 40 billion hours each year hauling water!  This leaves women & girls with little time for education or home-based industries.

Thinking about how different my life is from the life of a Liberian woman is what has modivated me to go to Liberia Africa with a non-profit organization called "Lifewater".  Lifewater is a volunteer-driven organization that trains & equips the rural poor in Africa to drill wells and build washrooms. They connect donors from around the world with overseas villagers that can not afford critically needed water & sanitation facilities.

We leave on Remembrance day, and are gone for about a month.  We will be learning primarily, about life in Liberia and the struggles that face girls and women there.  We are privaledged to have the opportunity to sing at the 300 well celebration along with a choir of orphaned Liberian children.  We are also going to have them sing with me on a song called "I live for you" from my upcoming album.

I know these experiences are going to shape and change me...I want to share some of my experiences along the way so I will be posting video blogs from the trip for you to watch and respond to.

We are doing a benefit concert in support of Lifewater on Thursday, Oct.9th at The Park Theater.  Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.  Tickets available at McNally Booksellers (Grant & Polo Park) and Into the Music, as well as by emailing tickets@jodiking.com

Driving home...crazy storm...head decaptitation! Thursday, July 31, 2008

Yesterday Chris and I drove home from Regina after playing a great show at a Brewery called "Bushwakker's" with local artist Ariel Mura.  We drove straight there and straight back...or that's what were were hoping for.  We hit the craziest elecrical storm I've ever driven through in my life!  It was like a strobe light went off in heaven and the sky was constantly lit up and thunder roared over our diesel engine and shook our little Jetta!  Then huge pieces of hail came flying from the sky and the storm followed us for our entire 6, I mean 8 hr. drive home...I usually love storms, and I did until the hail hit.  I felt so small in our little car, so helplessly at the mercy of the angry sky above.  I was incredibly thankful for shelter and my bed when I got home...have you ever been in a scarry storm?  I know this was nothing compared to the natural disasters that hit other parts of the world and leave people completely devistated; without shelter and sometimes without loved ones.  It put into perspective how good we have it hear in Canada...we have it so good...
When we were driving home we had to take a detour onto a dirt road past this stretch of highway that the cops had sectioned off.  A big bus was in the middle of it all, but we didn't know what was going on so we just kept driving.  Ironically as I write about how thankful I am to be home safe and sound, the news is covering a story about this bus we past.  Turns out a guy was sitting at the back of this bus listening to music on his headphones and the guy sitting next to him pulled out a knife, stabbed the guy and decaptitated him.  He then brought his head to the front of the bus and all hell broke loose!  This is not a joke...I guess no matter where you live humans are all a little crazy...a lot crazy.  I'll post a link to this story asap!!

Nashville Recording Video Thursday, July 03, 2008
In April  I took a trip to Nashville...music city, to record "I live for you" and "Cry for the last time" for my upcoming record.  Adrian Bradford held down production duties, and we had a killer band play on the tunes; Will Sayles (drums), Tyler Burkum (guitars), Matt Pierson (bass), Cason Cooley (organ), and I played keys on a beautiful Steinway piano!!  Check out the little video I did on my camera while in Nashville...then go to "join" on my website to sign up on the mailing list and get a free download of the new album ready version of "I live for you".

Spring...finally! Friday, May 02, 2008
I live in Winnipeg Manitoba; the middle of Canada, the heart of the prairies, the Christmas capital of Canada, slurpy capital of Canada, home to Burton Cummings...just thought you should know a bit about where I live!  One of the best things about living in Winnipeg is the changing seasons.  Its amazing to be a part of the the earths transitions, to feel the ache of winter and at the same time the warmth of the sun as it  reflects off the snow.  The leaves in fall are breathtaking, and being at my cabin in the summer is my favorite place in the world!  But my favorite season change is spring...everything can begin new again; fresh feelings and experiences to write about.  I love feeling renewed after a long winter...Each season bring a new perspective and I need that.

Recording the new album Tuesday, April 29, 2008

Its been an amazing experience watching my songs take shape!  In December and February we recorded 10 songs for the record here in Winnipeg.  Colin Munroe flew in from Toronto to produce, along with Stuart Cameron to play guitars.  In the middle of winter what else are you going to do?!
I just got back from a trip to Nashville to record two tracks; "Cry for the last time" and "I live for you".  Adrian Bradford produced held down production duties, and invited some amazing musicians to play.  I got up the nerve to play piano along with the band which was a growing experience for me...but good!   This month we're doing new photo's and I'm brainstorming on album titles...this is tougher than I thought!!
